10.25.3 - Goodnight. It turns out that the Iditarod has permanently disbanded. A final double-CD release will be issued this Winter on Camera Obscura Records, based in Australia. This is a re-issue of our first two, self-released Yuletide CDRs, now properly mixed and mastered. There is quite a lot of new, unreleased bonus material, as well (inlcuding live tracks from VPRO in Amsterdam and Terrastock 5 in Boston). New, unissued studio material is also included on the new Yuletide 2CD. A few other comp tracks may also surface here and there in the coming months, but this is pretty much it. The split LP scheduled with the Olivetree has been cancelled. Thanks to everyone for your support and interest over the years. Buy the new Camera Obscura release - it's good. See you later. WWW.CAMERAOBSCURA.COM.AU 5.30.3 - Sabbatical. Many new Iditarod recordings are being prepared for release throughout 2003, but we are taking a break from live performance. BF/BS will be touring heavily instead. WWW.BLACKFORESTBLACKSEA.COM 4.21.3 - Black Forest/Black Sea. So, the UK & Iceland tour was amazing! In the coming weeks, we'll be posting many great tour documents - photos, mp3s and other ephemera...stay tuned. We are currently in the midst of our late April tour with the fabulous Fursaxa from Philadelphia - check out the SHOWS page for a listing near you. Miriam and Jeffrey from Iditarod have started a new project called Black Forest/Black Sea and several of the shows with Fursaxa will feature material from this new project. Black Forest/Black Sea is also currently working on a soundtrack to a pseudo documentary about a butterfly collector that is being edited now by a graduating RISD film student. The new issue of Dream Magazine features an Iditarod interview. Many new reviews have also been recently published in Broken Face, The Wire and other fine magazines. We'll update our REVIEWS page shortly. 3.15.3 - Up, Up and Away. So, we leave in just a few days for England! All of our upcoming tourdates have just been updated, so check out the SHOWS page for details. Many great reviews have been surfacing for the recent Yuletide CD on Elsie and Jack as well as the River Nektar CD re-issue - be sure to stop by the REVIEWS page sometime. We have just completed a bunch of new recordings for an upcoming LP on the Last Visible Dog label. We're really excited about the tracks - the results from the studio sessions are most pleasant, indeed! The LVD LP will actually be a split 12" with our friend Glenn Donaldson from San Francisco. Glenn is involved with the Jewelled Antler collective out there and is quite active musically - a member of Thuja, Mirza, Blithe Sons and more! Glenn also records solo material under several different "tree" guises (the Birdtree, the Olivetree, the Ivytree, etc). Our upcoming split will be released as "the Iditarod and the Olivetree". Although the Last Visible Dog release will only be on vinyl, there is a very good chance that a CD version of the split (with extra tracks) will also be released in France! More on that soon...in the meantime, check out these fine links: JEWELLED ANTLER COLLECTIVE LAST VISIBLE DOG RECORDS Speaking of LVD, they are also releasing a fine double CD compilation next week called the Invisible Pyramid and it includes another new, exclusive track from the Iditarod. Some of the other featured artists include Fursaxa, Charalambides, Makoto Kawabata, Bardo Pond, Pelt, Birchville Cat Motel, Subarachnoid Space and more! It's also a very special release for us, as it offically marks the recording debut of Black Forest/Black Sea. 2.25.3 - Upcoming Shows. We've been busy rehearsing with our new tour lineup and writing/recording a lot of new material, as well. It has all been very productive. The CD has already received a lot of excellent press coverage - check out our REVIEWS page where we obsessively archive text of that sort. The Kleine CD-R is officially out of print. Plans are afoot for a double LP version of Kleine with some extra exclusive bits! Fleece Records down in Texas is working on a deluxe package complete with heavy, audiophile vinyl. It all sounds quite lovely...possibly a Summer release. We have been quite busy lately with our new record label called Secret Eye. WWW.SECRETEYE.ORG 1.2.3 - Happy New Year. QMS #6 has just been scheduled for DEC 19th with a rare acoustic Barnacled! 11.9.2 - Whole Lotta Love. Here's another smattering of news items: Terrastock 5 was fantastic - thanks to everyone involved! The Terrastock 7" Box Set was ready for the festival and they are quite beautiful indeed! Check www.time-lagrecords.com for info. A few reviews for the box are already up on our REVIEWS page - under 7"s. The River Nektar re-issues look and sound great - new reviews are also up on that same page. This BlueSanct re-issue (exclusively distributed by Secretly Canadian) will be released to stores in February 2003. For the past two winters we have released home-made Yuletide CDs and this year will be no different - except that we won't be doing them ourselves. We have recorded this new Yuletide with Sharron Kraus and it is going to be released on the fine Elsie and Jack label. We are very pleased that E&J are behind this release, especially because the label is split between the USA and the UK - just like this new Yuletide project with our friend Sharron from Oxford. Check www.elsieandjack.com for details as they unfold. We are in the early stages of planning a short tour of England and Scotland in March 2003. The live shows will feature the Iditarod, Sharron Kraus and various friends along the way. The tour will be in support of both The River Nektar (BlueSanct) and the new Iditarod with Sharron Kraus Yuletide CD (Elsie and Jack). If anyone can help out in the UK, please contact us! Thanks. Unfortunately, the gig planned for November in Chapel Hill, NC has been cancelled. The UNC radio station WXYC, who was sponsoring our visit, hopes to reschedule (perhaps next semester) - right now, they need to devote their attention to the station's tower/antenna. 10.4.2 - Autumnal News. A whole lot of goings on: Ptolemaic Terrascope #32 is out now (with an Iditarod interview and exclusive comp track). There is a new Iditarod interview in the current issue of the Northeast Performer. There are plenty of great new reviews on the site (the Wire, Exclaim!, T.O.P.I., Rockerilla, Dream and more). The CD re-issues of 'the River Nektar' are ready (!) and will be on sale at Terrastock. The Time-Lag Records split 7" project (the Iditarod, Sonic Youth, Bardo Pond, Stone Breath and Charalambides) will also be on sale at Terrastock. Terrastock is less than a week away (!) and we're putting together a really sharp set with fuzz guitar, tamboura, chord organ, drums, accordion, records and more. Finally, we've put up a guestbook on the website if anyone wants to say hello. Thanks. 9.17.2 - A Few Things. Sharron Kraus is now back in England after a two month long visit. We certainly had a wonderful time performing and also recording together. The special winter album that we've been working on will be issued in a few months as the third annual installment in our series of Iditarod 'Yuletide' releases. More details will be posted on the Iditarod with Sharron Kraus winter CD very soon. Also, the T.O.P.I. website in France has just put up a streaming audio version of "The Falling Of The Pine" which was taken from our recent full-length CD on BlueSanct. Check it out here: http://topiste.free.fr 9.10.2 - New MP3s. We put up a few live tracks from our recent WFMU radio session. Check out the MP3 page. We're also excited to see the long-awaited return of Stringbuilder as the original acoustic duo...cool! 9.3.2 - The Underwater Highway. The drive from Rhode Island to New York City usually takes three hours. Yesterday it took nearly eight (portions of I-95 were flooded). Needless to say, we missed most of our on-air gig at WFMU. Oh well. There was just enough time to air Sharron's set live and then our DJ, Irene Trudel, kindly offered to stay late and record an Iditarod set. So, tune in next week to WFMU - Monday September 9th at 4pm to hear the Iditarod "live" via magnetic tape. You can also listen online. Archived copies of both sets will also remain on the WFMU website indefinitely. 8.31.2 - Kleine on CD-R. AND, we are preparing another Iditarod yuletide surprise. 10.24.1 - Providence show announcement. (Change to previous post) Outsider folk vs. Over the hill punk SUNDAY NIGHT - OCTOBER 28th 7 PM MET CAFE PROVIDENCE, RI USA MICHAEL HURLEY the IDITAROD Mr. Hurley will be performing solo. Due to a death in the family, his tour was sadly cut short and his West Coast accompanists will not be appearing. However, this is a rare chance to see the legendary Snock attempt to overcome the sublime sounds of The Misfits wafting in from the club next door. Michael Hurley is a national treasure - one of the last remaining American rambling folk troubadours. A true hobo, he ventures from town to town in his 60s Chevy with no home to call his own. Making music since the days Bob Dylan first set foot in NYC's Gaslight club, Hurley recorded his first album for Moses Ash's legendary Folkways label in 1964 and continued to release albums for both Warner Brothers and Rounder. His mid-70s Have Moicy album was selected among the top 10 for the decade by Rolling Stone. "Michael Hurley is the last unreconstructed folkie-shaman in America. His songs are primordial tales of the hunt for good cheer and satisfying sex, etched like cave paintings on city walls and farmland silos. Like many characters in his songs, his voice seems to have been run over by the dump truck of life, but it marries human mystery to forthright music like no other." - Milo Miles 10.2.1 - Providence show announcement. MICHAEL HURLEY & FRIENDS, IDITAROD SUNDAY NIGHT - OCTOBER 28th 7 PM MET CAFE PROVIDENCE, RI USA MICHAEL HURLEY & HIS WEST COAST PALS featuring: ROBIN REMAILY & DAVE REISCH Michael Hurley’s latest album — Weatherhole on Field Recordings — shows no sign of artistic decline and garnered rave reviews. While most of his contemporaries are long past their prime or have expired, Hurley’s muse is still intact. Weatherhole is jam-packed with gems, such as “The Rue of Ruby Whores,” “Vanessa,” and “Wildgeeses” —songs that’ll make you laugh as well as weep. Hurley’s songwriting talent is something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by new a generation of musicians. In recent years, Hurley was invited to tour with alt-country heroes Son Volt and Lucinda Williams. He’s also shared bills with Smog and Palace Brothers, played with the Giant Sand rhythm section, and his songs have been covered by indie stars Cat Power and Yo La Tengo. Robin Remaily — childhood friend of Hurley and fellow rambler — wrote the 60s standard "Euphoria" (made famous by both the Youngbloods and the Holy Modal Rounders), in addition to a host of great songs that made it onto Holy Modal Rounders’ albums. These songs, however, are only the tip of the Remaily musical iceberg. Robin’s multi-instrumental expertise can be found on the Holy Modal Rounders LPs of the 70s, as well as on several Michael Hurley albums. On this tour Robin will add mandolin, fiddle, lap steel, quartro, and guitar to Hurley’s songs and will even moonlight some of his own. Bass player Dave Reisch is a long-time member of the Holy Modal Rounders clan, and can be heard on a number of HMR and Michael Hurley albums. Hurley considers Dave his most sympathetic interpreter and favorite backing musician — "…people always say we play as one." Dave usually backs Hurley on his European tours and out in the Portland, OR area. Hurley hasn’t played this side of the country with his two friends and accompanists in over a decade, so these shows will be a special treat for Hurley afficionados as well as for anyone into an eccentric mix of folk, blues, and country that’s pure as a mountain stream. 8.22.1 - Richmond show announcement. PELT, FURSAXA, IDITAROD & TANAKH SATURDAY NIGHT - AUGUST 25th 9 PM PYRAMID INSTITUTE RICHMOND, VA USA The only thing that is for certain is change and we are celebrating/mourning the passing of the Pyramid Institute this weekend. From Shriner's Temple, to speak easy, to teen-dance hall, to private club, to karate dojo, to Tanakh home/practice and recording space, and on now to "luxury apartments". (I hope the tenants of these new luxury apartments do not mind living amongst ghosts.) To mourn the passing Pelt, Fursaxa, Iditarod & Tanakh will be performing the night through, and perhaps a special performance by the ghosts as well, they have always been happy to make noise in the past. If you are not familiar with the bands playing they all can be found on the net and at the record store, but to generalize it will be a night of non-apethetic crusty acoustic/electric psychedelic folk-rock-ambience. Please come and bring your friends, and your own beverage of choice. Take the Broad street exit off of 64/95 and then flip a bitch so that you are heading north on Broad towards Church Hill (the numbers should be getting larger not smaller). Take Broad to 25th street then turn left, there is a light there and St. John's church resting ground to Elizabeth Poe mother of the great E.A.Poe. The Pyramid Institute is exactly one block from Broad, on the corner of Marshall and 25th - it is the huge corner building that is not a funeral home or deliverance temple. It will say Pyramid Institute Private club above the double grey doors. This show is free and so is the party since it is not a "legal" venue, but all of the bands besides Tanakh are from out of town so a donation of a few bucks or a couple beers would be nice, but follow your heart on that one. 8.13.1 - Recording. We are going down to a studio in Richmond, VA next week to record a bunch of new Iditarod material. The recordings are being done by Jesse of the band Tanakh. Also at Jesse's studio on Saturday August 25th we're playing a cool show: Pelt, Fursaxa, Tanakh and the Iditarod. We've arranged for Tara from Fursaxa to join in on some of our recording - we can't wait. The tracks will finish up our next full-length CD which is scheduled for a February 2002 release on BlueSanct Musak. In addition to new material, the forthcoming Iditarod CD includes long-distance collaborations that we've done with Fit & Limo and Alastair Galbraith. After the record is finished, we're going to start booking the 2nd "Poor Minstrels" tour which is also scheduled for February 2002 - this one will be a few weeks in Northern Europe with Drekka, the Iditarod, Ring and Peter Scion.
